For Hoisting Largest Indian Flag on Mount Kilimanjaro
Dar – Es – Salaam, Tanzania : The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling has set a remarkable milestone by hoisting the largest Indian national flag atop Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The flag, spanning an impressive 7,800 square feet, was raised by the Divyangjan Expedition between August 6 and 15, 2024, at the summit of Africa’s highest peak, which stands at 19,340 feet. The expedition coincided with India’s 78th Independence Day celebrations, marking the occasion with a profound symbol of national pride and resilience. The achievement was lauded during a reception hosted by the Indian High Commission in Tanzania, where the 78th Independence Day was celebrated with great fervor. The announcement was made by Mr. Santosh Shukla, President and CEO of the World Book of Records. The event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including the Chief Guest, H.E. Dr. Damas D Ndumbaro, Minister of Culture, Arts, and Sports, and the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, H.E. Mussa Azan Zungu. Members of the Indian community and Diaspora, along with representatives from the Tanzanian government and the diplomatic community, also joined the celebrations. During the event, the High Commissioner highlighted India’s journey to independence, its significant achievements thereafter, and the thriving bilateral relations with Tanzania. He reiterated India’s commitment to fostering stronger collaborations with Tanzania, further cementing the bond between the two nations. This historic achievement by the HMI symbolizes the enduring spirit of India and its dedication to inclusivity and national pride.
